Derek’s varied and multi-disciplinary career has enabled him to develop a rare blend of environmental, engineering, project and asset management, commercial and people management skills. Derek believes that successful projects require more than just technical skills – they also require excellence in project management, innovation and leadership. Derek founded the project management consultancy Genesis Projects in 2003. Genesis Projects specializes in capital infrastructure projects at all lifecycle phases and in supporting project owners and customers in developing capital investment systems and managing projects and programmes.

Laura has been Executive Assistant to Senior Managers at Ōtākaro (now Crown Infrastructure Development) and Project Coordinator for several Christchurch earthquake rebuild projects including North Frame Pedestrian Bridge and South Frame. Laura’s legal training as well as her experience in companies delivering large capital projects has enabled her to develop the key competencies required to support clients in project delivery. She is skilled at providing thorough and practical support at all lifecycle phases and aspects of project management. She has a thorough knowledge of the workings and implementation requirements for Schema4Projects.

    Derek played a significant role in the Port's recovery and redevelopment following the 2010-11 Christchurch earthquakes.     Derek received the following citation for his recognition of Kaupapa Māori in the development of the business case for the Fifteenth Avenue to Welcome Bay project: Derek has been rock solid in his engagement with hapū in the 15th Ave to Welcome Bay project. He has ensured the cultural values and significance of the wider scope of the project have been considered at every step. Derek has communicated effectively and openly about the challenges and opportunities and has always showed his support in making sure hapū have not only been heard, but that their advice has been considered and incorporated wherever possible. This collaborative approach has ensured hapū are true partners in a project that has meaning to their whānau and hapū members that goes far beyond this simply being a transportation project. As a result, Derek has built and maintained strong relationships with hapū that we feel are safe in his hands.
